Short History of Stansted Airport
The history of Stansted Airport begins in 1942 when it became a USAAF runaway. In 1966 BAA took control over the airport and in 1970 was extended the new terminal in order to fulfil the needs of the increasing number of passengers. In 1980 the Government approved BAA’s plan of development for the airport which was going to handle over 15 million passengers a year. In April 1986, work started on the development of the airport. In March 1991, the Queen officially opened the new terminal. The cost of the works was of £400 million. In June 1999 the permission was granted for the second phase of development of the airport. In 2000, the work on the second phase of development started. That involved the expansion of the airport to approximately 25 million passengers per year. London Stansted’s interim master plan was released in 2005.

More than 182,000 aircrafts land and depart from Stansted Airport each year. Among the most famous airlines there are: Ryanair, EasyJet, Germanwings, Thomson Airlines, etc. From Stansted Airport you can fly with a low-cost fare to the most important European destinations : Barcelona, Belfast, Berlin, Corfu, Amsterdam, Antalya, Dublin, Edinburgh, Frankfurt, Ibiza, Istanbul, Madrid, Milan, Naples, Marseille, Munich, Oslo, Pisa, Riga, Rome, Seville, Thesaloniki, Verona and many others.
Some useful information for any passenger: Stansted airport has only one main terminal. On the ground floor of the terminal you can find the check-in area. In order to find your check-in desk, you should look for your flight number on the screens that appear near the terminal entrance. The check-in zones start from A to K and are signposted by illuminated yellow cubes so it will not be hard to find the one you need. There are many facilities you can find in the airport, such as: baggage enquires, meeting and conference facilities which are available in the United Business Centre at Stansted Airport and in the hotels nearby, free wireless Internet that you can use to connect and find out the latest news or read your emails, car parking options, currency exchange, cash machines and so on.

Airlines will only carry animals if arrangements have been made in advance, as space is limited. There are two options and your airline will be able to tell you which services they are able to offer:
- as accompanied baggage (most airlines will accept animals as accompanied baggage providing they are in a suitable container, travelling in the baggage compartment where a suitable environment can be maintained for such cases)
- as air cargo (owners can arrange for their animals to travel as air cargo without making the journey themselves).
If you are looking for a prayer room, the airport chapel can be found in Check-in Zone J, opposite Caffè Alba. This place is available to those seeking a place for quiet and prayer. Opening hours are 05:00 to 23:00 daily. You can find the airport information desk in the international arrivals area. It is open 24 hours a day and provides help with general airport enquiries, flight information and paging calls. These desks also offer additional facilities such as: photocopying, sending and receiving faxes, printing on-line boarding documents (with a fee of £3.00 each). The information desk can also be used as a tourist information centre, offering information on transport connections, local accommodation and attractions nearby.
If you want to relax after a long flight you can book into one of airport’s lounges where you can enjoy tranquility and a lot of other complementary services such as drinks, snacks, newspapers and magazines. I used 247 to travel from Central London to Heathrow on a traffic-heavy Saturday afternoon. The driver was very punctual (as they were last time I used the service). He was friendly and polite, and helpful with my luggage. Despite the traffic and a hot afternoon, I had a quiet and relaxing transfer in plenty of time for my flight, plus (it would seem) for about half the price of any of the other transfer taxi companies. I've used a few of the other big taxi companies and I must say I would definitely pick 247 every time.
